Showers worsen garbage crisis in Thrissur
Threat of an epidemic unless preventive steps are taken.
The unexpected summer showers, which lashed most part of
the district on Tuesday morning, brought much-needed respite from the
oppressive heat. The weather was cloudy for most part of the day, a
striking contrast to the scorching sun which prevailed till Monday.
However,
the merry making was short-lived as the showers brought along a host of
issues in the city, which witnesses pathetic sanitation conditions.
Storm
water drains are chocked to such a degree that even minor summer rains
are causing flooding at most localities in the city.
The
constant threat of an epidemic outbreak looms large over Thrissur as
the garbage disposal from the City Corporation areas had been
discontinued for more than a year.
Filthy streets and
clogged drains pose a serious health hazard. The rotting garbage piles
on the streets and clogged drains become perfect breeding grounds for
mosquitoes. The intermittent rains have worsened the situation.
As the Corporation has no garbage disposal system in place, people are dumping plastic and garbage on roads and in the drains.
