Despite a few pavement sellers refusing to move out,
Thrissur Corporation officials continued their eviction drive at Sakthan
Nagar and Pattalam Road on Thursday.
Strict orders
Most
of the pavement sellers had vacated their places on Wednesday itself
after the corporation issued strict orders in this regard. The Mayor had
given instruction to the Corporation Secretary to remove the illegal
encroachments within seven days. Corporation officials with the help of
the city police removed the remaining vendors on Thursday.
The officials arrived at the spots with JCB and lorries to remove the illegal encroachments.
They
removed the make-shift stands left by the vendors. The encroachments at
Pattalam road were removed first. Illegal encroachments at Jaihind
market will be removed soon, the officials added.
Vendors stage protest
Meanwhile, the pavement vendors, who were evicted, took out a march to the corporation office on Thursday.
They
demanded rehabilitation package from the corporation. The decision to
begin the crackdown on illegal vendors was taken in a Corporation
Council meeting convened on February 16.
Remove the encroachments within seven days, Mayor tells Corporation Secretary.
