Bus stands to have more toilets to prevent open defecation
In a measure to prevent open defecation, the Corporation
is all set to construct four new toilets at a total cost of Rs. 80.40
lakh in bus stands and thickly populated areas.
The
toilets are to come up on the New Bus Stand premises (ward 24), at Old
Bus Stand (ward 16), Govinda Counder Thottam (ward 32) and at Valluvar
Nagar (ward 50).
The toilets are to be constructed at
a cost of Rs. 20.10 lakh each based on universal design. A total of Rs.
45 lakh was sanctioned through the Infrastructure Gap Filling Fund
2013-14, Rs. 30 lakh from the State Fund 2013-14 and Rs. 5.40 lakh from
the General Fund of the Corporation.
Officials said
that though toilets existed in the two bus stands, open defecation
continued at the entrance and hence toilets would be constructed there.
“The
public gather in large numbers in the bus stands, but stink emanates
from these places and pose health issues. Hence, the Corporation has
decided to construct one toilet in each bus stand apart from the already
existing ones,” they added.
The existing toilet in Valluvar Nagar, which is in a deplorable condition, would be demolished and a new toilet constructed.
The officials added that to prevent open defecation, residential areas were identified and toilets were being constructed.
