Patil to lay foundation stone of multilevel parking lot in Sector 17 today
UT administrator Shivraj V Patil will lay the foundation stone of a multilevel parking lot in Sector 17 on Tuesday.
While this parking lot will take 18 months to be completed, the
Municipal Corporation plans to construct three more such parking lots.
The multilevel parking lot in Sector 17 will have three storeys
with two of them being underground. Fitted with lifts, it will
accommodate 950 cars.
Mayor Subhash Chawla claims it is a Rs 40-crore project. “Sector
17 is a heritage zone. The kind of construction that can be undertaken
here is specified. That is why the multilevel parking lot will be
underground apart from surface parking being available,” he told a press
conference on Monday.
Apart from this, the MC will undertake construction of three more
multilevel parking lots once this one becomes operational. One of these
will be in Sector 17 on the plot where initially the multilevel parking
lot had been proposed, but later it was scrapped after the agency
allotted the contract went into arbitration. Following this, the civic
body was directed to pay Rs 2.61 crore to the agency. The MC is now
planning to appeal against the decision.
Chawla says that after the multilevel parking lots in Sector 17
are complete, the focus will shift to Sector 34. Another multilevel
parking lot is proposed for Sector 9. “The response to the multilevel
parking lot in Sector 17 will be assessed and then the other proposals
will be put into action,” he added.
The civic body also proposes to start paid parking in the
Industrial Area. A few months back, the area councillor had raised the
demand that the parking lots be made paid so that the parking situation
could be streamlined. While the first in line is the parking lot in
front of Elante mall, the others are being identified.
Proposals are also in the pipeline for ensuring proper usage of the underground parking lots in Sectors 9
and 17. The lack of security of vehicles and problem of
accumulation of water in the basement are some of the problems being
experienced here.
