BMC polls set for Jan 8
elections to the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) would be held
on January 8, 2014 and counting of votes would take place on January 9.
The BMC’s present term would end on December 9, 2013. While the filing
of nominations would begin from December 16 and close on December 20,
the scrutiny of the nominations would be held on December 23 and
withdrawal of the nominations would be on December 26.
The elections of the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor would take place on January 17 and February 5, respectively.
“With the announcement of the poll schedule, the model code of conduct
was put to immediate effect and will remain in force till the completion
of the counting of votes on January, 9,” SEC Ajit Kumar Tripathy told
reporters here.
The elections will be held to 67 wards of the BMC. A total of 34 wards
are reserved for women, six for SC, three for ST and 19 each for
Backward Class Citizens (BCC) and Reserved Women (RW) categories while
20 wards as unreserved.
Tripathy said two IAS officers and three other officials would be
engaged as observers and expenditure observers for smooth conduct of the
polls. A candidate can spend up to Rs 50,000.
“A control room will be opened at the SEC office and it will function
till the announcement of the results on January 9,” said Tripathy.
