Corporation areas to be extended
High drama prevailed at the monthly Corporation council
meeting here on Thursday when two zone Chairmen claim that no mass
cleaning works were being carried out in the wards in the afternoon, but
this was refuted by most of the councillors.
As soon
as the council meeting began, the issue of inadequate conservancy
workers for clearing garbage every day was raised by Ammapet Zone
Chairman Jayaprakash and this was followed by Hasthampatti Zone Chairman
Madheswaran.
City Health Officer K.V. Arjun Kumar
said that desilting of drains and clearing of garbage were carried out
in the afternoon hours in each ward.
But both the Chairmen said that no works were being carried out.
Corporation
Commissioner K.A. Selvaraj said that work status reports were obtained
from Assistant Commissioners every day and councillors could verify the
reports.
Mayor S. Soundappan sought to know from all
the 60 councillors whether works were being carried out or not. Most of
the councillors said that works were being carried out regularly and the
issue was settled.
Deputy Mayor N. Natesan wanted his ward with a population of more than 28,000 people to be trifurcated.
The Mayor said that all wards would soon be revamped and panchayats located near Corporation limits would be annexed.
The present number of 60 wards would be increased, he added.
Resolutions
were passed to purchase compactor bins at a cost of Rs. 27.60 lakh, dig
40 borewells, create rainwater harvesting system at a cost of Rs. 1.28
crore and purchase gadgets for conservancy workers at a cost of Rs. 6
lakh.
Mayor says that the number of wards in the Corporation would be raised soon
