Government moves SC to keep off BBMP waters
BANGALORE: Taking the line that it would not be possible to conduct the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) polls in time because of upcoming exams and preparations for the Budget, the state government filed a special leave petition in the Supreme Court on Tuesday.
The government has reportedly asked for six months time to hold the BBMP polls. The High Court had recently come down heavily on the state government for its ‘delaying tactics’ and ordered that the elections to the civic body be held before March 30.
In Bangalore, Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa said “Let the Supreme Court tell us what to do — Budget or exams or polls”. The Chief Minister claimed that officials were engaged in the Budget exercise, while teachers were tied up with exam work.
Advocate General Ashok Harnahalli said that the next step is to make an open mention of the special leave petition in the court.
According to official sources, Haranahalli is likely to do this either on Thursday or Friday.
The deadline set by the High Court for notifying the ward reservation list expires on Saturday.
