TUTICORIN: Ten village panchayats will come under Tuticorin Corporation limits and the number of wards is expected to increase from the existing 51.
The enumeration of population in these village panchayats would be taken up in due course of time, corporation sources said.
Having been accorded the status of corporation, Tuticorin is witnessing many development works. Pipelines were being laid for underground drainage (UGD) system which was taken up in January 2008.
The project is being carried out at an estimated cost of Rs. 80 crore and is expected to get over by June end as per an official notification.
However, sources said that it may get delayed by a few more months. Seventy eight km have been completed against the target of 115 km, an engineer said.
Though over 500 workers are engaged in the UGD project, Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage Board (TWAD) engineers claim that water was struck even at two feet depth since Tuticorin has a sandy soil.
Since it is situated along the sea, the water was also not receding. Water from the trenches, which were dug, had to be pumped out with a machine and sheet files were required to cover both sides of the work site. It also means expenditure and more time.
Under accelerator sludge process, the muddy matter was being removed easily in the dug up area.
Cooperation from people is needed at this juncture, sources said.
