Proposal to hike zoo entry fee rejected

Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation standing committee on Tuesday rejected the civic administration proposal to double the entry fee at the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, Katraj. “The proposal of increasing the entry fee for citizens in the park was rejected,” Arvind Shinde, chairman, standing committee said. There are 350 animals and birds of 45 different species in the zoo. The civic administration, in a proposal, had highlighted a need to increase the entry fee for citizens visiting the zoo. At present, the fee is among the lowest in the country. Children up to 12 years are charged Rs 5 and adults are charged Rs 10. Foreign tourists are charged Rs 25. It was proposed to charge Rs 10 for children, Rs 20 for adults and Rs 50 for foreigners. There has been no increase in charges since November 2008.
The civic administration has also proposed charges of Rs 25 for still photography and Rs 100 for video shooting at the zoo. The ticket charges for battery-operated van have been increased from Rs 10 to Rs 15 for children and from Rs 20 to Rs 25 for adults.
