Action sought against civic officials

GULBARGA: The Jai Karnataka Rakshana Vedike on Tuesday demanded that the State Government initiate disciplinary action against officials of the Gulbarga City Corporation for allegedly not cooperating with the district administration in widening the main roads in Gulbarga city.
Arunkumar S. Patil, president of the vedike, who led a procession here on Tuesday in protest against the alleged delay in taking up the road-widening work, said that some officials in the city corporation were not cooperating with the district administration in completing the joint measurement survey (JMS), which was essential to decide on the extent of land to be acquired for widening the roads. Mr. Patil said that according to the information available with him, the Government had decided to go by the direction of the Karnataka High Court on the payment of compensation to those who would be losing their lands and buildings for the road widening work. The Government had also released Rs. 16 crore for this purpose, he said.
However, the city corporation officials who had to complete the JMS and also submit the estimates for compensation to be paid to the individual loosers of the land and buildings had not completed the JMS so far.
The Special Land Acquisition Officer had asked the city corporation officials to complete the JMS and prepare the estimates by April this year.
