After sacking data operators, corporation scouts for new ones
CHENNAI: Even as the
Chennai Corporation is slowly recovering from the controversy regarding
cholera deaths, reportedly caused by errant data entry operators, wheels
are in motion to recruit a new set of these employees. But the civic
body says their job profile will be different this time.
The
civic body’s electrical department has released a tender announcement
calling for firms specialising in data entry operations who will be
working with the family health and welfare department. “For the family
welfare department’s needs of data entry to be done in English and
Tamil, we need people for a period of one year,” states the tender worth
Rs 16,20,000.

The civic body is looking to recruit 18 people
with a degree in any field and knowledge of oracle format. Corporation
commissioner D Karthikeyan said the new data entry operators would not
be given the job of entering births and deaths. “They will do the usual
office work like typing,” he said.

The recruitment drive comes
after the civic body suspended some senior officials, including city
health officer P Kuganantham, three sanitary inspectors and statistician
Mohammed Sherif
after mayor Saidai Duraisamy held them responsible for “misreporting”
some deaths under the head of ‘cholera.’ The corporation top brass said
data entry operators had wrongly registered deaths caused by ailments
such as senility, cardiac diseases and coronary attacks as cholera,
whooping cough and diphtheria. “There is a drop down box next to the
cause of the death column. Since cardiac arrest and cholera begin with
the letter ‘c,’ the operator wrongly clicked on cholera,” said a
statement issued by the corporation on July 25.

The civic body
had also said that the data entry operators were not properly trained.
The mayor ordered the immediate termination of contracts of the
operators. “Such important jobs should not be given to private people on
contract,” he had said.
