AMC planning to use alternative source of energy
AHMEDABAD: Taking a leaf out of the climate talks at 15th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) taking place at Copenhagen, Denmark, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is going green in a big way from solar powered streetlights to electricity generation, as also the garbage and energy audit for existing water and drainage pumping station in the city.
On the green initiatives in AMC, municipal commissioner IP Gautam said,” The ongoing COP15 meet has highlighted the grave concern of climate change. The civic body is trying to cut down the environmental pollution
with a number of initiatives, for instance by using alternative sources of energy. At major traffic junctions, streetlights will be run by solar-powered lights to cut the high expenditure on electricity.”
Under the Solid
Waste Management project of AMC, funded by Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), AMC authorities will be generating electricity out of the tons of garbage produced in the city.For scientific treatment of sewerage, AMC has proposed for three Activated Slush Process Sewerage Treatment Plant under JNNURM. The civic body will also be conducting energy audits for 26 drainage pumping station, and 26 water distribution station. A senior AMC official said,”The audit will help us in checking the use of electricity at these stations.”
AMC will be spending Rs 2 crore on the installation of solar street lights.
