Amma canteens complete 200 days in Salem
“As many as 12 lakh people have been provided food
through Amma Canteens in the city in 200 days”, Commissioner of Salem
Corporation M. Ashokan said on Wednesday.
He said this in connection with the celebration of the 200th day of the canteens in Salem city.
He
said that there are 10 Amma Canteens in the four zones in Salem city –
three each in Hasthampatti and Sooramangalam Zones and two each at
Kondalampatti and Ammapet Zones.
Good response
The canteens sell 12,000 idlis, 3,000 plates each of curd rice and sambar rice every day.
Mr.
Ashokan added that a total of 24 lakh idlis, six lakh curd rice and six
lakh sambar rice that have been sold out till Wednesday.
Mayor
of Salem Corporation S. Soundappan said that the canteens in the city
have provided job opportunities to 240 women members of self help
groups.
R. Saravanan (34) of Thoopukadu who frequents
the canteens made an appeal to the Corporation to increase the quantity
of food served in the canteens.
People also wanted
canteens in Salem to serve chappathi and other items that are served for
dinner in the ‘Amma Canteens’ in Chennai.
Responding
to these long pending requests, corporation officials said that it may
not be possible till the State Government sanctions funds for running
the canteens.
