BBMP committee polls today
June 28: The dates have finally been announced for the BBMP standing committee elections. They will be held after the zero hour during the council meeting on Tuesday. Since heads and members of the committees have not yet been finalised, election to only the taxation and finance committee will be held on Tuesday, said sources in the BBMP.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, mayor S.K. Nataraj said the election to all the eight standing committees will be held on Tuesday. The committees are taxation and finance, town planning and development, public health, public works, education and social justice, appeals, horticulture and markets, and accounts. Since the BBMP budget has been delayed, priority has been given to the tax and finance committee.
Sunkenahalli corporator P. Sadashiva is a strong contender for the chairmanship of the tax and finance committee. The other names doing the rounds are those of Vijayanagar corporator H. Ravindra, J P Park corporator B. R. Nanjundappa and B. V. Ganesh from Chamarajpet ward.
The Budget is slated to be tabled 15 days after the committee election to ensure that the ongoing projets in BBMP jurisdiction can be completed, said Mr Nataraj. However, the proposal for the formation of 12 committees is still alive and will be placed before the ongoing session for approval, after which it will be sent to the governor for his assent.
No budgetary allocation will be made in the upcoming budget for Kempegowda Day celebrations. Usually, Kempegowda Day is celebrated with the Bengaluru Karaga.
The state government will tag the celebration with the 500th birth anniversary of Kempegowda, the founder of Bengaluru. Corporators will organise cultural programmes in their respective wards as part of the fete.
