BBMP gears up for monsoons

Bengaluru:
In the wake of havoc created by the incessant rains there is a need to
revive the Bengaluru urban district disaster management committee 2005
with the active support from Non Government Organisations (NGOs), said
BBMP commissioner M. Lakshminarayan on Monday. It will help combat the
emergency situation in real time, he said.
The commissioner has
written a letter in this regard to the chief secretary of the state. In
his maiden review meeting with the officials of various departments like
revenue, engineering, health, lakes, horticulture Lakshminarayan said
that all officials must work on war footing to attend to the rain
related emergencies. NGOs must be roped in for the effective measures
and to reach the accident spots in real time.
The engineers wing
must identity the low lying areas and other flood prone areas and
efforts primary attention should be give towards desilting of major and
tertiary drains.
A comprehensive cleaning drive must happen,
apart from clearing plastic waste from drains and roads. Flood prone
areas must be identified through other departments like BWSSB, Bescom,
KPTCL, BMRCL, BDA and BMTC and necessary steps must be taken up, he
added.
Financial and technical constraints must be brought to the
notice of the commissioner, he said, directing concerned engineers to
clear the debris and weeds in vacant sites and recover the cost of
cleaning from them.
