The BBMP is gearing up to streamline garbage processing units at
Yelahanka and terra firma plants on Doddballapur Road, before High Court
judges visit these plants.
High Court judges N Kumar and
Nagaratna, who are hearing BBMP’s garbage disposal cases, are expected
to visit these units this week. In October, these two judges inspected
some processing units in Koramangala and Bommanahalli.
BBMP
Commissioner M Lakshminarayana along with solid waste management expert
committee members have visited many energy plants at Yelahanka, apart
from Terra Firma plants.
The Commissioner told Express that they visited the plants on Thursday to monitor their operations.
“Most
Terra Firma plants take mixed waste up to 500 tones. This waste is
being processed manually. We are looking for a semi- automated
technology,” he said. He also said the plants produce cakes made out of
low-grade plastic . “These cakes can be used during asphalting of roads.
I have directed engineers to use five per cent of plastic cakes in the
mix while asphalting roads,” he said.
On road connectivity, Lakshminarayana said some of the roads connecting terra firma plants need to be asphalted.
“We
have already given nod on the matter and work will commence soon,” he
said. The Yelahanka plant produces biogas, from which electricity is
generated. This electricity is supplied to the street lights in
Kuvempunagar ward in Byatarayanapura constituency.
