BBMP officials meet Chief Secretary on the implementation of ABC
Efficacy of the programme to be known only after five years
Bangalore: Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner Siddaiah and senior officials attended a review meeting on the implementation of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme, chaired by Chief Secretary, on Wednesday.
The meeting, attended by Joint Director (Animal Welfare) Parvez Ahmed Piran, discussed the steps to be taken to check the stray dog menace in the city.
Dr. Piran told The Hindu that the Chief Secretary reviewed the programme and suggested that it be intensified. He said there were 15 packages under the ABC programme in the city. “Plans are on the anvil to increase the number of packages to 20. However, this has to be approved by the BBMP Council. The tenders are ready,” he said.
If the number of packages are increased to 20, the BBMP will be able to perform over 80,000 operations under ABC a year.
“The sterilisation of dogs is a continuous process. We will know the efficacy of the programme at the end of five years. If the number of packages are increased, the BBMP will be in a better position to control the menace,” he added. In an effort to check the growing number of unauthorised layouts in the city, BBMP Commissioner Siddaiah and Bangalore Development Authority Commissioner Bharat Lal Meena met with Additional Chief Secretary (Urban Development) on Wednesday.
According to the two agencies, there are 120 unauthorised layouts in the city. They are likely to announce a plan of action to deal with them soon.
