BBMP to select new mayor today
April 22: The stage is set for the election of S.K. Nataraj and N.Dayanand as mayor and deputy mayor of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Paalike(BBMP) respectively with corporation officials making elaborate arrangements for the mayoral election slated to be held at the Kempe Gowda hall or council hall on Friday.
Regional commissioner G.M. Dhananjay will supervise the poll and also administer the oath of office to all 198 newly elected corporators. At least 10 corporators would be administered the oath at a time, sources said.
The oath-taking processs is slated to begin at 10 am followed by the mayoral election. With Rahukala prevailing between 10.30 am and 12 noon which is considered inauspicious, the mayor’s election is likely to happen after 12.
The BJP has achieved a majority on its own in the BBMP council winning 111 seats. While Mr Nataraj won from Sarakki ward, Mr Dayanand was the party’s candidate in Benniganahalli. The election is likely to be a formality with the Congress which has only 65 councillors, unlikely to put up candidates.
The elections to the posts of standing committee chairpersons and members is unlikely to be held on Friday as the members are yet to be finalised. Mr Dhananjay will decide the date for these elections.
The opposition parties — the Congress and JD(S)— are yet to submit the list of members to be selected to various BBMP committees, said sources.
The BBMP has made arrangements for parking of vehicles and has imposed restrictions on the entry of supporters and family members of electe representatives into the council hall.
Only vehicles which have BBMP passes, will be allowed to enter the premises.
