Bhumi puja for sewerage scheme performed
The bhumi puja for the much-awaited Underground Sewerage
Scheme (USS) for Udumalpet town was held on Sunday marking the
commencement of the works on the Rs. 56.07-crore project.
The
ceremony was performed in the presence of Deputy Speaker of the Tamil
Nadu Legislative Assembly Pollachi V. Jayaraman, Collector G.
Govindaraj, Udumalpet Municipal Chairperson K.G.S. Shobana, elected
representatives of civic bodies and officials of various departments.
Trial run
Municipal Commissioner K. Balakrishnan told
The Hindu
that the works on the USS project was expected to be completed by March
2015 and there would be a six-month trial run subsequent to it before
tapping its optimal utilisation. The Commissioner said that the 7.41 sq
km municipal area had been geographically divided into four parts for
the design of sewer collection system with a total of 96.96 km of sewer
pipes to be laid under the project.
“We are executing
the project with an eye to cater to the projected population of 90,301
in 2044. The sewage treatment plant being constructed under the scheme
is capable of treating 9.03 million litres of waste water and excrement a
day to be generated in 2044,” the Commissioner added.
