Birth certificate counters to be increased during rush time

About 3,000 to 4,000 certificates a day are issued during the month of June
PUDUCHERRY: With the school admission season round the corner, the Puducherry Municipality has already started to receive considerable number of persons applying for computerised birth certificates in the last few days.
Currently, computerised birth certificates are being issued at three counters at the municipality. . This might be increased to five at the time of rush, which is usually during June, officials of the local body said. “On an ordinary day, we issue about 300 to 400 computerised birth certificates and the number increases to a maximum of 3,000 to 4,000 certificates a day during the month of June. On Monday alone, the municipality issued 1,402 computerised birth certificates. Everyday, the counters function from 9 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.. On an average, it takes about five to 10 minutes to issue a computerised birth certificate on an ordinary day. But, the waiting time would be more in case of long queues during the peak season, officials said.
The municipality charges Rs. five for issuing a birth certificate. “These certificates are issued across the counter. So, people are advised to approach the municipality as early as possible to avoid rush,” Municipal Commissioner D. Asokan said.
