The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) finally seems to have
woke up from its slumber as far as mosquito menace is concerned. It has
decided to start a special drive to eradicate the menace in the Capital
city and a decision in this regard was taken at a high-level meeting
recently.
BMC has assigned 120 officials for controlling the
menace in 60 wards. As per the break-up, two officials for each ward
will be part of the drive. The major thrust will be targeting the
breeding grounds and cleaning the major drains in all the wards. A
technician will monitor mosquito density in all the wards.
The
civic body has also proposed to start fogging in all the wards for the
next two months till mosquito density comes down. BMC Mayor Ananta
Narayan Jena said salaries of 29 malaria supervisors have been stopped
for their negligence in controlling the mosquito problem.
“Their
salaries will be resumed only when they are able to bring down mosquito
density,” he said. The residents too have been asked to cover their
septic tanks with nets to prevent mosquito breeding.
