BMC gets set to handle emergencies
The BMC, which has kept aside Rs 8 crore for the festival, deployed 214 lifeguards at various immersions locations across the city and has also asked the navy to help in case of emergencies.
The civic body set up facilities such as mobile toilets, first-aid centers and searchlights for devotees at Girgaum, Juhu, Dadar and Marve beaches, which are the main immersion spots in the city. Also, motorboats and ambulances have been stationed at immersions locations for any emergencies.
At the Powai Lake, the BMC has set up safety nets at the spot where a crocodile attack was recently reported.
Last year, around 1.87 lakh idols were immersed on the tenth day of the festival. This year, the number is expected to go up by 10%. “Help has also been sought from non-government organisations too,” said municipal commissioner Swadheen Kshatriya.
