Cabinet to increase HMC boroughs, MMICs
Kolkata, 4 January – The state Cabinet today decided to increase the number of boroughs and
Member, Mayor-in-Council (MMIC), in the Howrah Municipal Corporation
that the Trinamul Congress wrested from the CPI-M in a landslide victory in November.
“The number of MMICs in Howrah Corporation will be raised to 10 from the
present five; the number of boroughs will be raised to seven from the
present five. To facilitate this, a borough in Howrah that at present
consists of 10 wards will be restructured accommodating 7-10 wards each,” state Municipal Affairs Minister Firhad Hakim told reporters after a Cabinet meeting at Nabanna this afternoon.
The Howrah Municipal Corporation has 50 wards.
The state government will soon make necessary amendments to the
concerned legislation and rules to effect the change. The minister also
said that the Bengal Engineering and Science College (Besu), Shibpur,
would prepare a master plan for implanting a comprehensive drinking
water, drainage and sewerage project in Howrah for which the state
government has already allocated Rs 108-crore.
