The Tourism Department has joined hands with the civic
administration to take up a campaign to improve cleanliness in places of
tourist attraction.
Eighteen garbage bins, acquired
at a cost of Rs.94, 000 by the department, to be placed in the heritage
town of Srirangam, were handed over to the Tiruchi Corporation on
Tuesday. Collector Jayashree Muralidharan formally handed over the bins
to the Corporation Commissioner V.P.Thandapani and also flagged off a
rally to sensitise people on the need to maintain public cleanliness in
the town.
While the administration was taking steps
to prevent the use of plastic products among commercial establishments,
members of the public should come forward to give up the use of
non-degradable plastics. About 300 students of Bishop Heber College,
J.J.College of Engineering and State Institute of Hotel Management and
Catering Technology participated in the rally from the Amma Mandapam to
the Rajagopuram in Srirangam.
R.Dhandapani, Tourism Officer, and other officials were present.
