Cauvery water in the pipeline
A project proposal is being prepared on the feasibility
of bringing Cauvery waters to Madurai through pipelines. The Tamil Nadu
Water and Drainage Board (TWAD) has started preparing a Detailed Project
Report and the proposal will be ready in two months. After receiving
the project report, the Corporation will approach the government and
funding agencies to execute the plan to meet the water needs of the
growing city. “We have asked the TWAD to do the consultancy work. Our
plan is to get at least 100 million litres a day from Cauvery river for
Madurai. If there is a dedicated water supply scheme, the city will be
able to overcome shortage of water during summer,” said A. Mathuram,
City Engineer in-charge of Madurai Corporation.
Mayor
V.V.Rajan Chellappa is planning to convene a meeting to discuss with
officials and water experts the Madurai-Cauvery water link.
Meanwhile,
the civic body has appealed to the public to consume water judiciously
so that water shortage can be handled better during summer.
