Chairpersons of municipalities elected

KOCHI: Chairpersons for the municipalities in the district were also elected on Monday, with one of them being elected by drawing of lots.
R. Venugopal of Congress was elected as the chairman of the Thripunithura municipality. He defeated C.N. Sundaran of CPI(M) by 26 votes against 22, as one vote was declared invalid.
Lisie George was elected as chairperson of Eloor municipality by drawing lots.
During the first phase of voting, UDF had 14 votes against 13 of LDF and three of BJP. One independent abstained from voting.
When the second round of voting was held after eliminating the candidate with lesser votes, both UDF and LDF got tied with 13 votes each, as one UDF vote was declared invalid. Following this, Ms. George was elected by drawing lots.
She defeated K.N. Velayudhan of CPI(M). U.R. Babu of CPI(M) was elected as chairman of Muvattupuzha municipality, after he defeated P.S. Salim Haji of Congress by 16 votes to 10.
Two votes were declared invalid. K.P. Babu of Congress beat K.V. Thomas of CPI(M) by 23 votes to 8 to become chairman of Kothamangalam municipality.
K.M. Abdul Salam of Congress became chairman of Perumbavoor municipality defeating G. Sunil Kumar of CPI (M) by 17 votes to 9, with one vote becoming invalid.
M.T. Jacob of Congress was elected unopposed as the chairman of Aluva municipality. Jamal Manakkadan of Congress was elected as chairman of Kalamassery municipality after he defeated P.K. Baby of CPI (M) by 24 votes to 17.
One vote was declared as invalid here. Valsala Prasannakumar of Congress was elected as chairperson of Paravur municipality, beating CPI(M) independent candidate K.J. Shine by 15 votes to 13.
One vote was declared invalid. C.K. Varghese of Congress was elected as chairperson of Angamaly municipality by defeating E.V. Kamalakshan of CPI(M) by 15 votes to 13, as two votes were declared invalid.
T.K. Devarajan of Congress was elected as chairman of Maradu municipality after he defeated P.K. Raju of CPI (M) by 23 votes to 10.
