The Chennai Corporation council on Friday requested the State government to rename the new budget restaurants ‘Amma Unavagam’.
“The
Council has passed the resolution following requests from a number of
residents to rename the budget restaurants,” said Mayor Saidai S.
Duraisamy. On Tuesday, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa inaugurated 15 budget
restaurants in all zones of the city. The Corporation will open 24 more
‘Amma Unavagams’ on the Chief Minister’s birthday on Sunday.
“The
Chennai Corporation will find suitable buildings on rent if officials
are unable to find a suitable place in a ward,” said Mr. Duraisamy. At
least 100 more ‘Amma Unavagams’ will be opened by March 31.
Women
from self-help groups have been given the responsibility of managing
the restaurants. The women workers will receive Rs. 300 a day as wages,
said Mr. Duraisamy.
The Amma Unavagams will offer idli (100 g) for a rupee, sambar rice (350 g) at Rs. 5 and curd rice (350 g) at Rs. 3.
