Civic polls before March 31: Minister
Elections to municipal corporations and municipalities
will be held before March 31 to replace the present special officers
with elected bodies.
A decision to this effect was
taken at the second day Collectors’ conference here on Thursday after
discussions at a session on municipal administration matters overseen by
Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy.
Speaking to the
media later on the conference sidelines, Municipal Administration
Minister M. Maheedhar Reddy said the tenure of the special officers
would end by March-end.
Enquiries with the department
revealed that elections are due for 13 out of the 16 municipal
corporations in the State and for 99 out of 134 old municipalities. The
elections to the newly created 26 municipalities, however, would be held
later.
The Minister said drinking water was being
supplied by tankers in 80 municipalities where availability became a
problem due to drought conditions.
Drinking water schemes taken up for 25 of these municipalities would be completed by March.
Following
improvement made to the system, drinking water was being supplied once
in three days at Madanapalle instead of once in 10 days as earlier.
The
Collectors had been asked to protect the land lying between 5 km and 15
km radius of municipalities in order to maintain a land bank for future
needs.
