Coimbatore corporation removes invasive species
COIMBATORE: The corporation of Coimbatore plans to remove invasive plant species from the tank bunds
and reserve sites located in the city limits before the onset of
Monsoon, this year. On Wednesday, the work began at a reserve site in Veerakeralam where invasive species were removed from a 40 cent park site.
“We have noticed that over the years, invasive species have taken over
the tank bunds and have caused huge damage to the ecology. With the
state facing a drought and the city staring at the same, we wanted to
take up some steps to preserve the ecology of the region,” said a town
planning wing officer.
City corporation commissioner, K Vijayakarthikeyan
said that they had already rolled out the plan. “We are currently
enumerating the data on the number of such trees and bushes. After that
we will begin the drive and use machinery to remove these species,” he
said.
