Collector visits garbage dump
Collector C.Samayamoorthy on Tuesday visited the
Corporation’s garbage dump at Ramaiyanpatti, where a fire has been
raging for the past four days, causing much hardship to the people
living in the area.
After the fire broke out in the
sprawling dump yard on Friday last, the local residents, seriously
affected by the smoke billowing from the yard, had submitted petitions
to the Collector and the Mayor to stop dumping of waste there.
A section of the local residents also blocked vehicular traffic on the Tirunelveli–Sankarankovil Highway.
Against
this backdrop, Mr.Samayamoorthy, accompanied by Corporation
Commissioner T.Mohan, visited the garbage dump and went around the spot
to ascertain the progress made in controlling the fire.
‘Segregate garbage’
He
asked the officials to segregate the garbage dumped there into smaller
blocks so that the fire would not spread to other areas and it would be
easy for the Fire and Rescue Service personnel to douse it.
He
said a permanent water source would be created near the dump to make
fire-fighting more effective. “As a permanent solution, the project on
generating electricity from garbage here will be expedited,”
Mr.Samayamoorthy said.
