Cong disrupts MCD House, seeks Mayor’s resignationStaff Reporter | New Delhi
After not allowing the functioning of MCD Standing Committee, Opposition Congress on Monday disturbed the House proceedings. While demanding resignation of Delhi Mayor Prithvi Raj Sahwney, Chairman Standing Committee Yongender Chandolia and concerned officials with immediate effect, they kept shouting slogans against the civic body. As the Acting Mayor Rajesh Gehlot failed to calm down agitating Congress councillors, the meet had to be adjourned. Only a few agenda items could be taken up.
Congress councillors led by leader of Opposition Jai Kishan Sharma came prepared with placards saying hang those responsible for death of 69 people in Lalita Park building collapse. They gathered in the Well kept sloganeering and did not allow the House to run. Deputy Mayor Gehlot, who was chairing the House meeting in the absence of Sahwney, waited for half an hour but adjourned the meeting when he did not succeed to run the House amidst the din. However, several BJP and BSP councillors termed the alleged protest as a political gimmick. “BJP has been unsuccessful to curb illegal construction activities in the Capital. In several residential areas, business activities are being carried out under the patronage of MCD officials having backing of BJP leaders. The fire in Chandni Chowk area on Sunday was one such example,” said Sharma.
“With these tricks Congress is trying to divert the attention of the common man towards the fault of the Congress-led Delhi Government. If they are really concerned about the death of 69 people, why the issue was not debated in the Assembly? They did not even bother to include it in the Assembly’s agenda,” said a BJP councillor.
