Congress, MIM avoid GHMC meet
Hyderabad, May 19: Elections to the ward committees of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) were put off indefinitely on Wednesday after the Congress and MIM corporators abstained from the voting process.
While the Congress floor leader, Mr Kaleru Venkatesham, termed it as a strategy to beat the opposition Telugu Desam at its own game, the TD floor leader, Mr Singireddy Srinivas, alleged the Congress leaders were demanding Rs 2 lakh from each of the aspiring candidates and wanted more time to settle the deal.
While the TD alleged that even ministers, MPs, MLCs and MLAs from the Congress have recommended too many names for the election and that the Congress mayor and corporators were unable to say yes or no to their senior leaders, Mr Venkatesham said the TD had planned to boycott the elections mid-way by creating an uproar that Congress was accommodating only its party workers on ward committees.
The mayor, Ms Kartika Reddy, said the meeting was being adjourned due to lack of quorum.
