DEDICATED: Employees of the Birth and Death Certification department of the city Corporation busy at work on Republic Day on Tuesday.
Thiruvananthapuram: For the first time since January 15 when the special drive to issue birth certificates for children began, the city Corporation office at Palayam remained free of winding queues on a week day. But inside the office, it was business as usual on Tuesday. Most of the employees in the Birth and Death Certification department gave up their holiday and turned up for work on Republic Day to process the long list of applications for birth certificate under a government project to distribute unique ID cards for schoolchildren.
Sub-Registrars K. Jayadevan and P. Ajayakumar were present in the office to supervise the work. Mr. Jayadevan said 5,000 certificates were prepared on Tuesday. These will be posted to the applicants on Wednesday. Women employees also reported for duty.
A press note quoting Corporation Secretary Mohammed Sageer said the Corporation office was witnessing an unprecedented rush of applicants for birth certificate.
“Most of the employees report for work at 8.30 a.m. and work late into the night. They also turned up for work last Sunday. The situation is placing tremendous pressure on the staff and has seriously affected the daily functioning of the Corporation office,” Mr. Jayadevan said.
