Corporation initiates drive to facilitate flow of storm water

TIRUCHI: The Corporation has taken up an initiative for removing the
water hyacinth in the Uyyakondan river and other water bodies in the
city for ensuring free flow of storm water.
Incessant rain for the past few days and sharp showers on Sunday
resulted in slow discharge of flood water in the low lying areas. The
surplus discharge from the Koraiyar, Ariyar and Uyyakondan rivers
reaches the Cauvery through the Puthur weir.
S. Sujatha, Mayor, accompanied by T. T. Balsamy, Corporation
Commissioner, inspected the work on cleaning of hyacinth and
Cholaganparai and Vayalur road. The Mayor urged the officials to employ
additional workers for expeditious clearing of the vegetation.
Later the Mayor inspected the flood prevention works in Ilango street
in Thyagaraja nagar in ward 60, where the banks of a local canal had
weakened and were prone for developing breaches.
The Mayor also visited AUT Colony, Kudamuritti river, Ammayappa nagar
and Puthur weir. She advised the officials to clear plastic wastes and
old tyres especially in low lying areas.
People heaved a sigh of relief on Monday following let up in the showers.
