Irked by absence of officials, Opposition members walk out |
BJP alleges that the Mayor lacks administrative control
Mayor condemns Opposition members for their ‘irresponsible behaviour’
MYSORE: The absence of key officials and lack of quorum resulted in the adjournment of the Mysore City Corporation Council meeting, which was scheduled to be held on Tuesday.
The council met at 3 p.m. as scheduled but the Opposition members were irked by the absence of key officials, including corporation Commissioner K.S. Raykar.
Leader of the Opposition Nagendra of the BJP took exception to the absence of the Commissioner. Mayor Purushottam informed the members that Mr. Raykar was on leave. It transpired that the Commissioner had handed over charge to Commissioner of Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) P.C. Jayanna to officiate the corporation meeting but he was called by higher officials to attend a meeting pertaining to a Union Government project. As a result, council secretary Gayatri was asked to officiate at the meeting.
‘Indifferent’
The BJP alleged that the Mayor lacked administrative control and alleged that the officials were indifferent to the elected representatives. The Mayor tried to reason with the Opposition that the council secretary could officiate as per the rules, but the Opposition members remained adamant and walked out. The meeting was initially adjourned for 30 minutes during which the councillors and the Mayor met in the ante-chamber discussing the legality of the council secretary chairing the meeting. But the Opposition members remained adamant and did not assemble when the council was re-convened. Since there was no quorum, the Mayor was forced to adjourn the meeting.
Later, Mr. Purushottam condemned Opposition members for what he described as their “irresponsible behaviour”. “They are elected representatives and should know the rules governing the Council,” the Mayor said.
