On a sprawling 25,000 square feet space, a three-storey modern mini
convention centre will come up at Kuravankonam to be constructed by the
City Corporation. A budgetary announcement of 2013-14 financial year,
the funding of Rs 4 crore is envisaged to complete the work on the
complex.
Works have started and the first phase, the construction
of the ground floor, is to be completed by spending Rs 75 lakh in
association with Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project (KSUDP).
The second floor would be completed utilising plan fund.
The
centre is coming up in the area where a market was situated. The ground
floor will have parking facilities and space for shops that will be
rented out. The first floor too will have space for shops. The second
floor will house the spacious air-conditioned convention centre, with a
seating capacity of more than 1,000.
“The convention centre will
be an answer to the need of the area to have an affordable centre for
conducting functions. People in the Nanthancode-Kowdiar-Kesavadasapuram
area, would benefit out of it. A nominal rate will be charged for
conducting functions there,” said Kuravankonam ward councillor P
Syamkumar. The rates would be decided by the council on completion of
the works.
Preliminary works have been started by the contractor.
The parking lot is expected to accommodate as many as 25 vehicles at a
time. The structural design is made by the engineering wing of the
corporation. Inauguration of the construction activities will be held
towards this month end. The entire works are to be completed in
two-year’s time.
