Corporation removes 1,387 non-Tamil nameboards

Launching the drive earlier in the day on Mount Road, Mayor M Subramanian said, “About 85 per cent of shops and commercial establishments in the city have placed Tamil name-boards within the extended deadline that ended on Sunday. The civic body will carry out the removal of boards from the remaining shops as they failed to heed the appeal made by the Corporation.”

While thanking the shop owners who changed their shop’s name-boards with Tamil letters, the Mayor cautioned the remaining shop owners to follow suit or expect Corporation officials at their shops. “The drive will continue till all the non-Tamil boards are removed,” the Mayor added.

As per the Tamil Nadu Shops and Establishment Rules, 1948, the nameboard of every establishment should be in Tamil and wherever other languages were also used, the English version could be kept in the second place followed by other languages, if any. The rules prescribe that the Tamil version should be written prominently. Though the rules were framed years ago, several firms did not follow the rule.
