Corporation to launch two projects for SC students
The City Corporation will soon launch two projects
aimed at improving the academic performance of Scheduled Caste (SC)
students.
The standing committee on Education is
drawing up the final form of these projects, one for providing financial
aid to students studying professional courses and another for special
tuition to improve their academic performance.
The
project to provide financial assistance to Scheduled Caste students who
opt for professional courses will allot Rs.25,000 in the first year for
those studying in colleges located within the State. For those studying
outside, the amount provided will be Rs.50,000.
“Applications
have been invited already. For now, we are providing financial
assistance only for the first year, as a measure of encouragement for
them. Giving such assistance through the course is not possible right
now, but we will consider it,” said K.S. Sheela, chairperson of the
Education standing committee.
The second project is
aimed at helping Plus Two students who want to take up professional
courses. Special weekend tuition will be arranged for Scheduled Caste
students, free of cost, with focus on science subjects and mathematics.
“As
per the plan, there will be two classes a week, of four hours duration
each. We are thinking of conducting the classes at the technical school
at Pongumoodu. The classes will be conducted by experts from IHRD and
other institutions.
“We are also looking for retired teachers who would like to volunteer for a small sum,” said Ms. Sheela.
The Corporation is planning to expand the special tuitions to economically backward students too.
