Civic issues: Mayor B. Kartika Reddy’s image on a giant TV screen during
the GHMC meeting on Thursday.
HYDERABAD: Pathetic road conditions and sub-standard desilting works
on the storm water drains by GHMC came up for stringent criticism with
corporators demanding Commissioner Sameer Sharma to make the officials
concerned be held accountable.
At an unprecedented special meeting called by Mayor B. Kartika Reddy
to discuss these two issues on Thursday, they sought a system be evolved
to ensure roads maintenance and desilting works taken up each year
spending crores of rupees was qualitative.
Erring contractors should be put in the black list and executive
engineers should supervise all important works – were their suggestions
to the Commissioner.
Majlis Mirza Baig wanted cement blocks be put at water logging points
and fresh road works be delayed till storm water drains and water
pipeline works completed.
Shifting of poles should be expedited wherever a road was widened.
Amjedullah Khan of Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) charged that proper
supervision was lacking and contractors were playing truant sitting on
the works for months.
His challenge to Chief Engineer Dhan Singh, who came under severe
attack, to promise new road works that can last for two years did not
evoke any response.
Telugu Desam’s Singireddy Srinivas Reddy pointed out that lives of
citizens were in danger due to bad roads and the quality control cell
headed by a junior engineer was ill-equipped and understaffed to check
the works. Moreover, it lacked a proper lab.
He called for restoration of advanced payment for permitting road cutting.
Congress Harivardhan Reddy wondered why road repairs were not taken
up before the rains which could have prevented major damages.
Commissioner Sameer Sharma agreed with the members on most counts and
assured that quality control cell would be strengthened and all new
roads would be checked for density and compactness.
