Corporators want slums upto 2000 rehabililated as project affected
MUMBAI: Corporators across parties have demanded that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) consider 2000 as the cut off date for giving alternate accommodation to the slums alongside of the Tansa pipeline.
Following guidelines from the High Court the BMC has been taking action against slums alongside 10 metres of the Tansa pipeline in the city.
The BMC undertook demolition in G-north (Dharavi, Mahim) and South
(Bhandup) ward in November 2011, and in that drive the BMC gave
alternate accommodation to slums dwellers who were there before 1995.
Since then no demolition has taken, only notices are being served due
to the lack of tenentments for PAP’s. But the corporators say that when
slums coming in way of metro and mono rail projects and projects on the
airport authority the cut off date is 2000 and so even for the BMC
projects the same cut off line should be followed.
There is a court case pending in the Supreme Court
in which the cut off line will be decided. Slums that exists before the
cut off line are treated as legal and are given alternate accommodation
when being evicted.
Ramesh Korgaonkar said that slums that
there demolished and if they were after 1995 and before 2000 should be
given alternate accommodation.
BMC administration clarified
that the datum line for proving the slums legal will remain as 1995 for
all its projects including the Tansa pipeline slum removal project.
Sandeep Deshpande, MNS corporator said that if the slums before 2000
are given alternate accommodation and if the SC verdict is not in favour
of extending the datum line will the BMC strip the poor slum dwellers
off their homes.
