Curtains come down on elected body

VIJAYAWADA: To mark the end of the five-year tenure of 59 corporators on Wednesday, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) organised a farewell to them in Hotel Fortune Murali Park.
Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal, Mayor M.V. Ratna Bindu, MLC Ilapuram Venkaiah and Vijayawada Central MLA Malladi Vishnu felicitated the corporators. They presented shawls and specially designed mementoes to the members of the fifth general body of the VMC.
The Corporation designed the mementoes with photographs of respective corporator and Municipal Commissioner G. Ravi Babu.
Mr. Ravi Babu made a power point presentation on the progress in the city from 2005 to 2010, and explained about the developmental works taken up in each division.
Works of a value of more than Rs. 37 crore were taken up in 45th division represented by Congress corporator Pilli Lakshmi Tulasi, while Rs. 30-crore worth works were completed in 55th division represented by CPI (M) floor leader Ch. Babu Rao, according to Mr. Ravi Babu. There were claps and applauds in the hall when the Commissioner reeled out statistics pertaining to these corporators.
Proposals
Mr. Ravi Babu said the city made rapid strides during the last five years, and would continue to do so in the years to come. Proposals to the tune of Rs. 3,300 crore were submitted under the new ‘Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) Plus’, in addition to proposals for Rs. 2,604 crore under Rajiv Awas Yojana and Rs. 388 crore under Thirteenth Finance Commission. The VMC would also construct Rajiv Smritivanam shortly.
Pointing out that a maximum number of women corporators were elected to the fifth general body, Ms. Ratna Bindu expressed satisfaction that women corporators were able to compete with their male counterparts in developing their divisions on all fronts.
MLC Jelli Wilson, Deputy Mayor S.P. Gritton, former Mayors Tadi Sakuntala and Mallika Begum, former Deputy Mayors Ch. Krishna Kumar, Anne Prasanna, Samanthapudi Narasarju, CPI floor leader D. Sankar, Mr. Babu Rao, Sub-Collector K. Dharma Reddy and others were present.
