Curtains down on council meet
KOCHI: With no decisions and measures left to be announced, the term of the 16th council of the Kochi Corporation, in effect, ended on Thursday.Though the tenure of the present Corporation Council will end only after two weeks, new decisions or measures will not be taken during this time. With the local body polls being slated for October last week, both the ruling front, LDF, and the Opposition, UDF, will step into the election arena raising allegations and counter allegations.
The LDF will highlight the development activities that have taken place in the city over the last five years as their major election weapon while the UDF alleges that the LDF reign has resulted in the degradation of the city.
However, the last meeting of the present council held on Thursday ended in a peaceful and calm manner.
Mayor Mercy Williams expressed her thanks to each and every councillor and staff who extended their support to the council over the last five years. “The present council succeeded in implementing several development programmes in the city. Irrespective of the political differences, the councillors also supported the council. Likewise, the various media, though critical of the Corporation, have played a major role in the development of the city,” Mercy Williams said.
A photo session of the councillors was held after the council meeting.
