Death of stray dogs: VMC denies role
The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has asserted that it has no
role to play in, and take action with regard to, the alleged poisoning
of stray dogs in the third lane of Madhura Nagar.
Veterinary Assistant Surgeon (VAS) Z. Srinivasa Rao said
on Thursday that he inquired into the incident, which was reported in
these columns. “Though the matter does not come under the purview of the
corporation, we visited the area to understand the facts keeping in
view the public interest,” he said. Mr. Rao maintained that it primarily
appeared to be a case of dogs possibly dying due to rat poisoning.
As the duty of the VMC was limited to controlling of
stray dogs, the alleged killings would not come under its purview, he
asserted, adding that a VAS from the Animal Husbandry Department would
attend the post-mortem and submit a report to higher ups concerned.
