Drive to check stray dog menace on

On the trail: SPCA workers catching stray dogs within Oulgaret Municipality limits in Puducherry on Tuesday.
PUDUCHERRY: Around 20 stray dogs were caught in Ashok Nagar and Pettuchettypet areas as part of a dog-catching operation launched in Oulgaret Municipality on Tuesday.
The operation is being carried out by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), Puducherry, in association with the Animal Husbandry and the Animal Welfare Department. Around five dog catchers from Puducherry are involved in the initiative, apart from the supervisory staff from the municipality. .
An official of the Oulgaret Municipality said that the operation would be taken up ward-wise in 37 wards within the municipal limits and is expected to be completed in a month.
Officials of the SPCA said that as per the rules set by the Animal Welfare Board of India, the dogs would be sterilised and then given post-operative care for five days before being let off in the area from where they were caught. The dogs would also be given anti-rabies vaccine before being released. The municipality would be spending Rs. 300 on each dog, the officials said.
The Oulgaret Municipality had earlier received complaints of stray dog menace from several parts of the town, including Kalapet, Kamban Nagar, Subbiah Nagar, Lawspet and Pakkamudayanpet.
