The Municipal Administration Department has indicated to the National
Green Tribunal that dumpyards in 10 urban civic bodies in the State
would soon be closed in a scientific manner.

Proposals from
private companies have been invited for this purpose. The companies,
through appointment of consultants, would be asked to produce detailed
project reports for the scientific closure of yards in places including
Cuddalore, Poonamalle and Tiruvannamalai.

The information was
provided to the NGT in the hearing of cases relating to illegal dumping
of garbage on water bodies across the State last week.

The
department said latest scientific processes such as use of geo-synthetic
liners and polyethylene membranes would be used to close the yards. The
reclaimed lands would then be converted to parks and playgrounds.
