E-waste management rules announced
Placing the onus of collecting and processing of electronic waste on the producer, the Ministry of Environment and Forests has for the first time announced E-waste (Management and Handling) Rules on June 9.
To be enforced from May 1, 2012, the rules will place ‘Extended Production Responsibility’ (EPR) on producers of all electronic and electrical equipment, making them liable beyond manufacture to ensure environmentally safe management of their end-of-life products.
The Ministry has stipulated that producers will be responsible for the setting up of collection centres for all their products, besides providing all their equipment with a unique serial number which will help in tracking them in the management system, and to ensure channelising of such kind of waste to a recycler.
