Encroachments removed

Coimbatore Corporation officials on Wednesday removed encroachments in Pappanaickenpalayam.
According
to sources, following complaints from residents to Mayor S.M. Velusamy
and Commissioner G. Latha, the Corporation’s North Zone officials led by
Assistant Commissioner V. Saravanan carried out the drive around 8 a.m.
They ended the operation by 2 p.m.
The sources said
that the officials removed the encroachments in Venugopal Layout and
neighbouring areas, where around 25 shopkeepers and hoteliers had
encroached upon the road space by extending their shops, or placing
stoves and washbasins.
A few shopkeepers had also constructed sheds.
When
the operations ended, the Corporation was able to restore 15 feet of
encroached space, enabling road users to negotiate turns with ease.
The eviction drive was the latest in the Corporation’s efforts to remove encroachments on roads and reserve sites.
The sources added that the civic body officials would carry out more such drives in the coming days.
