The US Consulate General, Chennai, in association with the
Corporation of Chennai, has started a four-day Communicative English
Language Teaching Methods workshop for 60 Chennai Corporation School
teachers.
The course, which began from Monday, will see Senior
English Language Fellow Michelle Stabler-Havener, who works at the
Regional Institute of English in Bangalore, conducting workshops for
teachers who handle classes from grade three to nine.
“I am
delighted that the Chennai Corporation has taken the initiative to
empower its teachers with new skills to teach the next generation of
young students from Tamil Nadu. There are many new and innovative
communication technologies which are vastly different from the old
paradigm of teaching and learning, and this has made a tremendous impact
in the classroom,” US Consulate General, Chennai Acting Consul General
Nicholas Manring said.
“The new methods of instruction aim to move
a generation of teachers and students into the 21st century. These
methods will help teachers to move away from rote teaching to
interactive methods geared toward improving learning outcomes at
schools,” Manring added.
The workshop will focus on vocabulary,
speaking, planning lessons and objectives. The 30 participants of the
workshop on June 17 and June 18 will include teachers who handle grades
three to five and the other 30 participants on June 19 and June 20 will
include teachers who handle grades six to nine.
