MYSORE: The Mysore Urban Development Authority’s (MUDA) proposal to offer developed sites in lieu of cash compensation did not go down well with farmers, who demanded a larger share of sites for surrendering their land.
At a meeting convened by MUDA here on Wednesday, MUDA Commissioner P.C. Jayanna explained the salient features of the new land acquisition formula based on the Gujarat model which, he said, would make farmers partners in development.
Mr. Jayanna said that the MUDA would offer developed sites in the same locality to farmers in lieu of cash compensation for the land acquired.
He suggested a 60:40 ratio but the farmers demanded 50 per cent of the sites developed as their share for surrendering their land.
About 200 farmers from Mysore and surrounding areas affected by the denotification process attended the meeting and expressed their reservations about the land acquisition process.
The consensus was that landowners with large holdings would benefit by the sites offered. But small farmers with landholdings of one or two acres would suffer and lose their source of livelihood.
Mr. Jayanna said the farmers’ views would be discussed with higher authorities pending a final decision.
It was pointed out that about 18 sites of 30×40 dimension could be developed on one acre of land and the MUDA would offer farmers six developed sites to secure their future.
But the farmers would not be eligible for commercial sites or corner sites.
