Five Water Board officials arrested for negligence
July 29: Fourteen months after contaminated water claimed 17 lives and left hundreds of others sick in Bholakpur, the police on Thursday arrested five Water Board officials for negligence. The Central Crime Station arrested the then chief general manager, Mr Manohar Babu, the GM, Mr Praveen Kumar, the deputy GM, Mr Rajshekar Reddy, the Bholakpur area manager, Mr David Raju, and the technician, Mr Umamaheswar Rao. They were released on personal bond.
The Institute of Preventive Medicine found that the drinking water supplied to Bholakpur contained E.coli bacteria, which is found in human faeces. The contamination was caused by seepage of sewage water into the drinking water pipeline. The Central Crime Station assistant commissioner of police, Mr K.P. Laxmi Naik, said they were arrested under IPC Sections 304A (causing death by negligence), 270 (malignant act likely to spread infection of disease) .
